First Trailer “Captain America: Civil War”

The film, Directed by the Anthony and Joe Russo, is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016. New planetary find "best chance for life outside our solar system"

Astronomers have made two new planetary discoveries that they claim expand the known boundaries of our solar system -- and they may be the biggest breakthroughs in the search for alien life. The two finds, one planet at the edge of our solar system and one just beyond, have both been hailed as major scientific advances. Commenting on one of the planets, Brad Tucker, an astronomer from Mount Stromlo Observatory in Canberra, Australia who was not involved in the research, said it "probably gives us the best chance for life outside our solar system right now." "One of the goals of astronomy and astrophysics and finding these planets is firstly to really find another Earth," he added. "And part of the reason of finding another Earth is that we ultimately do want to find life in the universe. It's a question that weighs on everyone's mind."

Life outside solar system

Lying on the edge of our solar system, a new, rocky planet close to the size of Earth and named GJ 1132b, is the discovery that holds the most potential for finding new life to date, according to astronomers. The scientists who discovered it it said its small size and proximity -- it's three times closer than any other similar object found orbiting a star -- "bodes well for studies of the planet's atmosphere," according to their report in the journal, Nature.

"GJ 1132b (is) arguably the most important planet ever found outside the solar system," Drake Deming, an astronomer at the University of Maryland said in an accompanying letter in the journal. He added that it's proximity will "allow astronomers to study the planet with unprecedented fidelity." Found moving across a "red dwarf" star that is only a fifth of the size of the world's sun, the planet has a radius only 16% larger than Earth's, and has surface temperatures that reach 260 degrees Celsius. Although that's too hot to retain liquid water or sustain life as we know it, Tucker said it was cool enough to support some of the basic building blocks of life, and possibly support life forms like bacteria.

"We haven't even found anything close to this so far," he said. "It's more habitable, it's less harsh and this gives us a good strong chance of actually finding life or something as opposed to the other Earth-like planets found to date." The planet also completes an orbit or passes its star once every 1.6 days, providing more opportunities for research and measurement than any other planet has provided to date, Tucker added.

"By being able to find evidence of these smaller, more inner planets, these rocky planets that we have in our solar system, we're really realizing that the planets are probably in the trillions in our galaxy alone."

Growing solar system

The known boundaries of our solar system have also been expanded with the discovery of a "dwarf planet" so distant that it's three times further away than Pluto. Scientists said initial studies suggest that the object, which has been given the designation V774104, is likely to be an icy body between 500 to 1,000 km wide, although further research is required to determine its orbit.

"We can't explain these objects' orbits from what we know about the solar system," said Scott Sheppard, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., who announced the discovery at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Sheppard was part of a team of astronomers from Japan's Subaru telescope, located on top of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano in Hawaii, that found the icy planet, which lies 15.4 billion kilometers (9.6 billion miles) from the sun. The discovery marks the edge of the solar system, and hence the end of the sun's gravitational influence, according to the scientists. It also confirms that the solar system is far more complicated than astronomers previously imagined, according to Tucker.

"The reason this find is important is we don't actually know how our solar system was formed, there really is a mystery out there," he said. "We have a poor understanding of it because we keep finding new objects like this, and if we don't understand how our solar system formed, we don't know the ingredients that are required to make an earth. And the ultimate question -- what is the boundary of our solar system?"

Dazzling opening of BPL T20

The Opening Ceremony of 3rd edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 cricket held yesterday evening through a colorful ceremony at the home of cricket Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital’s Mirpur area.

The Mayan Empire: Rise and Fall

The Maya refer to both a modern-day people who can be found all over the world as well as their ancestors who built an ancient civilization that stretched throughout much of Central America, one that reached its peak during the first millennium A.D.The Maya civilization was never unified; rather, it consisted of numerous small states, ruled by kings, each apparently centered on a city. Sometimes, a stronger Maya state would dominate a weaker state and be able to exact tribute and labor from it.

The RISE

The earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic or Formative Period. The earliest Maya were agricultural, growing crops such as corn (maize), beans, squash and cassava (manioc). During the Middle Preclassic Period, which lasted until about 300 B.C., Maya farmers began to expand their presence both in the highland and lowland regions. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major Mesoamerican civilization, the Olmecs. Like other Mesamerican peoples, such as the Zapotec, Totonac, Teotihuacán and Aztec, the Maya derived a number of religious and cultural traits–as well as their number system and their famous calendar–from the Olmec.

In addition to agriculture, the Preclassic Maya also displayed more advanced cultural traits like

pyramid-building, city construction and the inscribing of stone monuments. The Late Preclassic city of Mirador, in the northern Peten, was one of the greatest cities ever built in the pre-Columbian Americas. Its size dwarfed the Classic Maya capital of Tikal, and its existence proves that the Maya flourished centuries before the Classic Period.

Coe writes that the ancient Maya reached a peak between A.D. 250 and 900, a time that archaeologists call the “Classic” period when numerous Maya cities flourished throughout much of Central America.The civilization “reached intellectual and artistic heights which no other in the New World, and few in Europe, could match at the time,” Coe writes. “Large populations, a flourishing economy, and widespread trade were typical of the Classic …” he said, noting that warfare was also quite common.

The Maya civilization was influenced by the city of Teotihuacan, located farther to the west. At Tikal, it appears that one of their early rulers, named Siyaj K’ak, may have come from there. According to an inscription, he ascended the throne on Sept. 13, A.D. 379, and is depicted wearing feathers and shells and holding an atlatl (spear-thrower), features associated with Teotihuacan, writes researcher John Montgomery in his book "Tikal: An Illustrated History of the Mayan Capital" (Hippocrene Books, 2001).

The numerous cities found throughout the Maya world each had their own individual wonders that made them unique. Tikal, for instance, is known for its pyramid building. Starting at least as early as A.D. 672, the city’s rulers would construct a twin pyramid complex at the end of every K’atun (20-year period). Each of these pyramids would be flat-topped, built adjacent to each other and contain a staircase on each side. Between the pyramids was a plaza that had structures laid out to the north and south.

Copan, a Maya city in modern-day Honduras, is known for its “Temple of the Hieroglyphic Stairway.” It’s a pyramid-like structure that has more than 2,000 glyphs embellished on a flight of 63 steps, the longest ancient Maya inscription known to exist and appears to tell the history of the city’s rulers.s before the Classic Period.

The FALL

From the late eighth through the end of the ninth century, something unknown happened to shake the Maya civilization to its foundations. One by one, the Classic cities in the southern lowlands were abandoned, and by A.D. 900, Maya civilization in that region had collapsed. The reason for this mysterious decline is unknown, though scholars have developed several competing theories.

Some believe that by the ninth century the Maya had exhausted the environment around them to the point that it could no longer sustain a very large population. Other Maya scholars argue that constant warfare among competing city-states led the complicated military, family (by marriage) and trade alliances between them to break down, along with the traditional system of dynastic power. As the stature of the holy lords diminished, their complex traditions of rituals and ceremonies dissolved into chaos. Finally, some catastrophic environmental change–like an extremely long, intense period of drought–may have wiped out the Classic Maya civilization. Drought would have hit cities like Tikal–where rainwater was necessary for drinking as well as for crop irrigation–especially hard.

All three of these factors–overpopulation and overuse of the land, endemic warfare and drought–may have played a part in the downfall of the Maya in the southern lowlands. In the highlands of the Yucatan, a few Maya cities–such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Mayapán–continued to flourish in the Post-Classic Period (A.D. 900-1500). By the time the Spanish invaders arrived, however, most Maya were living in agricultural villages, their great cities buried under a layer of rain-forest green.

'TOMB RAIDER' Reboot Finds Director

After more than five years in development, the Tomb Raider reboot has discovered a director. Roar Uthaug, the director behind the Norwegian disaster drama The Wave, will direct MGM and Warner Bros.'s feature project which will center around the tomb-raiding adventures of archaeologist Lara Croft.

In addition, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a Black List honoree and co-writer on Transformers 5, is in talks with the studio to write the screenplay.

Plot details remain to be unsealed, but the film will detail Croft's first adventure. Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby previously worked on the script.

Croft is the star of a series of hit video games and one of the best known video game characters. She first appeared on screen portrayed by Angelina Jolie in 2001 in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, a blockbuster distributed by Paramount.

MITCHELL JOHNSON retires from International cricket

Mitchell Johnson has decided to call time on his international career at the end of the ongoing second Test match against New Zealand at the WACA in Perth. The 34-year old fearsome Australian pacer announced his farewell ahead of the final day's play on Tuesday, November 17; "The ride has to come to an end at some point and to do so here at the WACA is very special."

With a career spanning over ten years, and often plagued by injuries, Johnson is the fourth-highest wicket-taker of Australia in Tests. He has taken 311 wickets from 73 games.

"I've given the decision a lot of thought. Beyond this match, I'm just not sure that I can continue competing consistently at the level required to wear the baggy green. I feel now is the best time to say goodbye, I have been lucky to have a wonderful career and enjoyed every moment playing for my country."

Johnson also represented Australia in 153 One-Day Internationals, bagging 239 wickets between 2005 and 2015.

Paris attacks: ISIS claims responsibility, 128 people died

The near-simultaneous attacks in Paris that killed nearly 130 people were an "act of war" organised by the Islamic State (IS) militant group, French President Francois Hollande says.

He said the attacks, carried out by eight gunmen and suicide bombers, were "organised and planned from outside".

The targets included bars, restaurants, a concert and a high-profile football match. IS claimed the attacks.

Mr Hollande has declared three days of national mourning.

He raised the security threat level to its highest point and imposed a nationwide state of emergency. Hospital officials now put the number of injured at 300. Eighty are in a critical condition.

These are the deadliest attacks in peacetime France, and only the fourth time since WW2 that a state of emergency has been imposed. The last time was during a 2005 wave of riots in poor suburbs.
It is the worst atrocity in Europe since the 2004 Madrid bombings.

The night of violence unfolded soon after 21:00 (20:00 GMT) as people were enjoying a Friday night out in the French capital.

A gunman opened fire on Le Carillon bar in the rue Alibert, not far from the Place de la Republique, before heading across the road to Le Petit Cambodge (Little Cambodia), killing at least 12 people.

"We heard the sound of guns, 30-second bursts. It was endless. We thought it was fireworks," Pierre Montfort, a resident living close to Le Petit Cambodge, said.

A few streets away, diners sitting on the terrace of La Casa Nostra pizzeria in rue de la Fontaine au Roi, were also fired on, with the loss of at least five lives.

At around the same time, on the northern outskirts of Paris, 80,000 people who had gathered to watch France play Germany at the Stade de France heard three explosions outside the stadium.

President Hollande was among the spectators and was whisked to safety after the first explosion. It later emerged three suicide bombers blew themselves up at fast food outlets and a brasserie near the stadium.

A Syrian passport was found on the body of one of the bombers at the stadium, police say.

Facebook's 360-degree videos arrive on iPhone and Gear VR

Facebook users are getting a neat little update today; they can now watch 360-degree videos.

The social network is expanding support for the immersive News Feed videos in a big way, the company announced. Facebook is adding support for iOS and Gear VR headsets (but not Google Cardboard) and some consumer 360-degree cameras. It's also opening the format to brands who want to experiment with the videos. The functionality has been available since September.

Announcing the news, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post, "360 video is a completely new experience because you can move the camera around. This opens new ways of sharing experiences and makes you feel like you're part of what you're watching. It's a step towards even more immersive experiences." He shared a 360-degree video shot by ABC News in North Korea. Zuckerberg added that the support for the new video feature on the social platform will help people to share a lot more 360 content in the future. Notably, Facebook now has 1.1 billion daily active users.

The company has also launched a dedicated site for 360-degree videos where users can get knowledge about recording and sharing the videos. The dedicated website also lists some 360-degree videos shared by Nickelodeon, World Surf League (WSL), VICE, and LeBron. In September, publishers who shared 360-degree videos at launch were GoPro, Discovery, and Saturday Night Live.

The likes of Tendulkar (33 off 20), Virender Sehwag (16 off 8), Shaun Pollock (55 off 22) Brian Lara (19 off 21) and Sourav Ganguly (12 off 12) enthralled a sizable crowd with their brief knocks at Minute Maid Park, otherwise a Baseball venue, but it was not enough to scale down the mammoth target, ending at 208 for eight in 20 overs.

In the first match, Warne's Warriors beat Sachin's Blasters by 6 wickets. Warne led by example with 3 for 20 while Ricky Ponting hit 48 not out to guide them home. Virender Sehwag hit 55 for Sachin's Blasters.

The 'legends' now travel to Los Angeles for the final game of the series on Saturday.

Nicole Kidman in Talks to Join Gal Gadot in " Wonder Woman "

Oscar winner actress Nicole Kidman is in ongoing negotiations to play as Queen Hippolyta, the mother of the Amazonian princess alongside Gal Gadot in Warner Bros’s “Wonder Woman,”

A representative for Warner Bros. had no comment.

Patty Jenkins is directing the comic book movie, which will co-star Chris Pine as Wonder Woman’s love interest Steve Trevor — who isn’t around to just send flowers and kill spiders.

While Kidman’s potential role has yet to be confirmed, the Queen of the Amazons in the “Wonder Woman” comics is Hyppolyta, who also happens to be Diana Prince’s biological mother — though it’s unclear whether the film will remain faithful to that storyline.

Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are producing “Wonder Woman” with Charles Roven and Richard Suckle of Atlas Entertainment. Jason Fuchs wrote the script.

Wonder Woman will be introduced in next year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” before her solo movie hits theaters on June 23, 2017.

Bangladesh seal fifth ODI series in a row

The last four series wins have drilled into Bangladesh the way to get out of tight corners. So when they were faced with another, in the second ODI against Zimbabwe in Mirpur on Monday, they stuck to the known paths and ensured a way out. The 58-run win defending a total of 241 for 9 gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead and made it five bilateral ODI series wins in a row at home for Bangladesh, their conquests including Pakistan, India and South Africa earlier this year.

They beat their own record of four series wins in a row in 2006-07 and 2009 and the lead means that, in ODIs, Bangladesh will be unbeaten in bilateral series throughout 2015 unless there is another series next month.

The third and final game of the series will be held at the same ground on Wednesday.
